| Soil suitability
testing provides valuable information about the soils
ability to receive and treat septic effluent, support
basements and site rural subdivisions. Soil tests
allow planners, developers and builders to make wise
decisions on how to best utilize a site and how they can
reduce potential negative impacts to the environment.
The McHenry-Lake County Soil and
Water Conservation District provides soil suitability
testing for the following uses:
Tests
- Soil Borings for Septic
Suitability - These
tests insure that soils used for absorption fields
can both receive/dispose of AND
treat septic effluent.
- Soil Borings for Basement
Suitability -
Determine the depth to the seasonal high
groundwater. These tests allow builders to site
basements to avoid water problems.
- Intensive Soil Survey
- These are soil
tests conducted on sites that will support rural
subdivisions. These subdivisions require individual
septic systems. The intensive soil surveys map out
soil conditions allowing planners to insure that
each lot contains at least a 1/2 acre area of soil
suitable for septic systems.
- Soil Borings for Land
Application of Septage
- County Ordinance requires that
material pumped from septic tanks be either at
wastewater treatment facilities or applied to
agricultural land with soils capable of treating
septage. Soil tests can locate areas that meet
requirements for this purpose.
- Hydric Soil
Investigations -
These are soil tests that are conducted to assist in
the delineation of wetland areas.
